DAHLIAS

Are these flowers awesome or what?  While visiting one of my favorite friends recently, she took me to the community garden.  The garden is available to anyone who wants a plot for vegetables or flowers.  The main attraction is the proflieration of dahlias.  Every color combination, all sizes,  shapes and all lovingly maintained by one man who was a botanist many years ago.  Dahlias, though beautiful, require a lot of TLC prior to blooming, during season and during storage time.  You will need  rebar for staking, which should indicate how tall and strong these beauties are.

Oh...everyone (visitors included) is encouraged to cut flowers. Scissors are placed in the garden for that purpose.  The only time the flowers were off limits was during a photo shoot.  Not just any shoot but one that will be featured in the March 2012 issue of OUR STATE. The dahlias will be on the cover.  How about that for an introduction to spring? (OUR STATE just happens to be my favorite magazine!)  Where is this garden?  Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, NC
